The 29LK is a 1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost (40/50). The model earned the accolade, “the best car in the world” at a time when most “horseless carriages” were noisy and cantankerous. The smooth, powerful, near-silent six-cylinder engine and silky ride of the Silver Ghost represented a revolutionary advance in motoring.
It was massively overbuilt and under-stressed. The large high-torque engine and excellent ride quality made the car incredibly rugged and reliable. By 1923, an increase in engine displacement from 7 to 7.5 liters, dual magneto and coil ignition, large rear drum brakes, four-speed transmission and a sturdier frame were incorporated to handle the heavier coachwork of the period.
29LK, a long wheelbase chassis, was sent to Barkers to be fitted with a “Pullman Limousine” body on May 11, 1923, and was subsequently re-bodied with its current straight-sided Barker style tourer body by Jim Marland of Bolton, England.
Owners Doug and Mary White have driven 29LK more than 200,000 miles over the 40 years of ownership, always taking challenging back roads. It has been driven round trip from North Carolina to Alaska, participated in the SGA tour of South Africa, driven across the continental United State numerous times, and traversed Ireland, the UK, western Europe and Canada.
