This 1979 Datsun 280ZX was given to the winningest driver in SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) history, Jim "Fitzy" Fitzgerald, to be built and raced for the Nissan brand. Fitzgerald built this car to racing standards in 1979 using the L28 motor with triple Solex Mikuni carburetors, a five-speed Datsun comp II transmission and an R180 rear end. Fitzgerald raced this Datsun 280ZX from 1978 thru 1983 in various classes, primarily on the East Coast.

It made several appearances at the Walter Mitty races at Road Atlanta, as well as the Rolex Reunion in Monterey at Laguna Seca. Fitzgerald won more than 350 races in his legendary career, many in this Datsun. He was instrumental in teaching and coaching American actor, director, producer, entrepreneur, philanthropist and race car driver Paul Newman during his racing career as the two were close friends.
